Abstract

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to examine the patients who were brought to the Emergency Medicine Department of Erciyes University School of Medicine due to the traffic accidents during the sacrifice festival holidays with long and short period between 2001 and 2003.
METHOD: The cases were evaluated according to the following criteria: age, gender, date of arrival to the emergency department, localization of injury, and value of Injury Severity Score (ISS).
RESULTS: Seventy seven percent of 104 cases between 4 and 75 years old were male, and 23% were female. It was determined that number of the patients increased on the first and last days of the holidays. Evaluation of ISS scores of the patients revealed that there were no statistically significant differences between the years although scores of those patients in 2001 were high (p>0.05).
CONCLUSION: Our findings show that, numbers of traffic accidents increase during the prolonged sacrifice festivals holidays compared to the short ones.
